Three types of nuclear families

A nuclear family is one that has two adults (parents) and one or more children. They live together as a unit and share responsibilities. It is considered one of the best and most stable of family. The parents consider raising their children their first priority. The children are raised to respect their parents and other and look to their parents for guidance and support. Nuclear families can be divided into three types on the basis of the employment status.

  • In the first type of nuclear family, the male adult works outside the home and earns the salary to support the home. The female adult works within the house and looks after the home and children. More than 28% of the population in the U.S. adopt this type of nuclear family.
  • The second type of family is one in which the female adult works outside the home to earn money for the family while the male adult works within the home to look after the children. Only 2% of the population adopt this type of nuclear family.
  • In the third type of nuclear family, both the male and female adults work outside the home to earn money to support the family. Usually, the children are cared for in Day Cares or by home nannies. In this type of family system, the burden of earning and the children responsibilities are equally shared by husband and wife. More than 50% of the population in the U.S. adopt such type of nuclear family.
